Notes and Editorial Reviews

This must be ranked among Ex Cathedra Consort's finest recordings, from the impressive technical execution to the vibrant, ideally balanced ensemble sound. Few listeners will be familiar with these 15 Latin motets, which apparently are being presented for the "first time since the 17th century", but the style will not be foreign to anyone who knows Tallis, Weelkes, and Tomkins. Martin Peerson (c.1572-1651) wrote in the same rich-textured, melodically fluid manner of his more illustrious contemporaries and like them was very attentive to the emotional effect that could be achieved with the appropriate marriage of text and harmony--not forgetting the affective allure of dissonance and chromaticism. Although not a genius, Peerson certainly was Read more a master of choral composition, and works such as the intensely dark and sensuous Levavi oculos meos, O domine Jesu Christe, and Lavoravi in gemitu meo make an unforgettable impression, recalling the more searingly poignant moments in Tallis' Lamentations of Jeremiah and the Weelkes and Tomkins settings of When David heard that Absalom was slain. This is a fascinating look at a composer whose obscurity has nothing to do with the quality of his music. And Jeffrey Skidmore's Ex Cathedra is a joy to hear. The recording is a bit bright, but this is a matter of taste--and you can easily tame it with your amplifier controls. [3/15/2005]
