Notes and Editorial Reviews

Polish-born Arturn Rubinstein (1887-1982) was one of the most notable pianists of the 20th century, a performing genius. He is represented in the new Living Era Classics series by two remarkable concerto performances. The first is his 1929 recording of the Brahms No.2 with the LSO under Coates, in which his playing has a bravura and panache that clearly demonstrates why he was so successful with audiences of the period. His equally famous 1932 recording of Tchaikovsky's First with the young John Barbirolli was one of the factors in his making him famous in America. In this recording Rubinstein's playing has both excitement and poise; his technical control is absolute. Aideed by Barbirolli's passionate conducting, fine playing from the Read more London Symphony Orchestra, and good recorded sound, this was to become a bench-mark recording of this popular work.
