A Small Sax With A Big Voice April 8, 2014 By Nigel  Wood See All My Reviews "Convergence is the third album by Farrell Vernon featuring the sopranino saxophone. This saxophone sounds an octave above the alto saxophone and is the second smallest member of the saxophone family. It is one of the seven saxophones originally patented by Adolphe Sax in 1846. This particular saxophone has never gained the popularity that most of the others have enjoyed. It has remained neglected until more recently and recordings of the sopranino are scarce. One of Vernon’s other recordings is aptly entitled The Forgotten Saxophone. The sopranino’s relative obscurity could partly be attributed to the technical difficulties one encounters to play it; particularly the tuning and control of tone. Few composers have specifically written for the sopranino, therefore it is rarely played other than by saxophone ensembles, or in contemporary music performances, or by jazz soloists. The music presented on Convergence spans several centuries - from baroque to contemporary. The quality of tone Vernon produces throughout the album is captivating and colourful yet remarkably consistent throughout the registers. It is often said that the timbre of the higher pitched saxophones is somewhat ‘oboe-esque’, although here, the rich, lower tones evoke more a hint of cor-anglais, particularly in the baroque tracks. The sopranino voice sings beautifully in the classical pieces such as Fauré‘s Sicilienne and Delibe’s Flower Duet, while a brighter and more typically ‘nino-istic’ sonority characterises the playing in the Debussy and Cavalcante. The variable instrumentation of the accompaniments, which include guitar, piano, harpsichord, strings, bass clarinet and percussion provide additional contrast and interest. The pieces are all well arranged and skilfully crafted to suit the sopranino and will hopefully encourage more composers to write specifically for this versatile instrument. Overall this album is well produced, masterfully played and a joy to listen to. It certainly shines a bright spotlight on the sopranino saxophone as a solo instrument. You don’t have to be a saxophonist to enjoy Convergence." Report Abuse
