Notes and Editorial Reviews

Acclaimed Polish-born tenor Piotr Beczala pays tribute to the Austrian singer Richard Tauber (1891-1948), one of the most widely celebrated musical celebrities of his time.

A prominent exponent of popular song and operetta, Tauber's career is closely associated with operetta's golden age in pre-war Europe.

In this recording Beczala shares his deeply honed affinity for this timeless, eternally popular music in a delightful recital of operetta favorites by Lehár, Kálmán, Robert Stolz, Johann Strauss II, and others, continuing the tradition of legendary predecessors like Fritz Wunderlich and Nicolai Gedda.

With special guest appearances from Anna Netrebko (Lippen schweigen),
Read more The Berlin Comedian Harmonists, Avi Avital, and Austrian soprano Daniela Fally, plus a unique duet with Richard Tauber himself, using special 21st-century technology and a recorded master from 1934.

A frequent DG "guest" artist, this is Beczala's first solo album with the label.

Recognized by many as one of the greatest tenors in the world, Piotr is regularly praised for his artistry, immaculate musicianship, keen interpretive intelligence, and flawless, elegant delivery. A perfectly cultivated and stylish singer, he is currently at the pinnacle of his career. Read less

A vocal delight July 24, 2013 By J. Stanton (Castlemaine, Victoria) See All My Reviews "Piotr Beczala the star lyric tenor of moment and has one of the most beautiful and brilliant tenor voices in recent times. It was inevitable he give us a recital of popular classical songs, and what a gift it is. Here he has used the name of Richard Tauber as a marketing tool and a good ploy it is too. Certainly these songs were made famous by Tauber but as a curiosity track with Beczala singing with Tauber shows his voice is tonally very different, reminiscent rather of Wunderlich,or the great Hungariann tenor Sandor Konya or even Jussi Bjorling, but it a great pleasure to hear these songs sung ith such verve, masculinity and joy, A must have issue" Report Abuse
Love it July 8, 2013 By William Schneider (Yaphank, NY) See All My Reviews "Though after all these years I can not really compare the quality and weight of Taubers voice to Beczala do to the different recording technologies,I must say that I loved the music and singing on the disc as it brought flooding back to me memories of my Grandfather and myself listing to Tauber on his 78rpm player 60+ years ago. This music along with Tanhauser and his other recordings were my introduction to good music. While my memories are not yours, the disc stands on its own as a tribute to this great artist and a very enjoyable disc well done." Report Abuse
Loud Yes. Tauber no. June 27, 2013 By G K Barranger (Covington, LA) See All My Reviews "This is not a bad disk exactly, although it is a pity that it is sailing under the auspices of Richard Tauber. The amazing thing about Tauber is that his was a voice that was modest. But his artistry was immense. Beczala is a classic spinto tenor; Tauber wasn't. What Tauber was was the epitome of elegance. Beczala is a weight-lifter. If he aspires to the kind of musical elegance that Tauber embodies, he has a ways to to get there. It would have been far better to advertise this as a wanderjahr through the German musical meadow of Weimar musical treats including Lehar etc rather than to trade on the invocation of Tauber whose wonderfulness is far better captured in the more nuanced repertoire of the art song going as far out as Ole Speaks (Sylvia) where mezzo voce shading is everything.
