Notes and Editorial Reviews

Focusing on British composers who settled in the early US, this collection runs a broad stylistic gamut. Exhilarating and captivating.

This harpsichord compilation focuses on composers of British nationality who settled in the newly constituted United States of America. The material runs a curiously broad stylistic gamut, from James Hewitt's folksy, exhilarating set of Yankee Doodle variations, to the excellent late-1760s style of the Sonata No. 3 in D by a composer known to us only as "Mr. Newman." Sometimes the style changes even within a given piece: William Selby's Voluntary No. 8 begins with an introductory movement in the dotted rhythm of the French overture, continues with a brief attempt at two-part
Read more fugal writing, and then suddenly shifts into a set of early-Classical Italian clichés (complete with Alberti bass) whose sheer energy is captivating.

Olivier Baumont's performances are fluent and clear, without the excessive dash that sometimes mars explorations into the pleasant but oftentimes-ephemeral harpsichord literature of this period. He has chosen a varied and interesting selection of works, perhaps reaching a musical nadir (and historical summit) in Hewitt's The Battle of Trenton. This sequence of brief musical phrases with descriptive narration of the battle in question is amusing, but if you enjoy the genre, Marin Marais was more successful in his Le Tableau de I 'operation de la taille (or, in the English, Music for an Operation to Remove Stones from the Gall Bladder).

Sound on this CD is excellent. The restored harpsichord by Jacques Goermans (Paris, 1774) is a marvel of delicacy and sweetness, without apparent noise deriving from incidental mechanical operations. My only regret is that, with barely 50 minutes of music, Baumont didn't see fit to include more selections in his survey. Recommended, nonetheless.
