Notes and Editorial Reviews

John Philip Sousa’s swift rise to fame and greatness came at a time when band concerts were the most important aspect of musical life in the US. The works on this recording range from the early Revival March of 1876 and the stirring Right Forward March from Sousa’s time as conductor of the US Marine band, to the “up-to-date” 1920s fox-trot Peaches and Cream and the 1923 Leaves from My Notebook, dedicated to the Campfire Girls of America. Music from Sousa’s operetta Chris and the Wonderful Lamp can be found alongside his medley of tunes from Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, which includes many of the hit tunes from this operetta, while The Honored Dead was performed at President Ulysses S. Grant’s funeral. John Philip Sousa’s swift rise to fame and greatness came at a time when band concerts were the most important aspect of musical life in the US.  Great Band Concert! June 20, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Naxos' on-going Sousa project has been uniformly outstanding, and this (Vol. 12)may well be the highlight so far. Playing with razor sharp precision and obvious enthusiasm for the 'Sousa sound', the excellent Royal Swedish Navy Band delivers an exciting performance of 17 Sousa compositions, ranging from marches to symphonic band suites. This is a recording sure to catch the attention of anyone who enjoys energetic band concerts, which this most certainly is. Want proof? For starters, I can almost hear Gilbert and Sullivan applauding Sousa's riotous integration of themes from The Mikado to form a toe-tapping march with almost irresistible appeal. Or how about Sousa's march-like take on the classic tune capturing the momentum of Gen. Sherman's army cutting its way through Georgia in 1864 (although some diehard unreconstructed Lost Cause souls may decry the tune's carefree arrogance!) Then there is the solemn The Honored Dead march played at President Grant's funeral, and to top off the entire recording, we have the unmistakable rhythm of a military band on the march ('Right-Left March') with the band members occasionally calling cadence. These and the other tracks on this fine disk set a standard of excellence of which Naxos can be proud. Do give this recording a try; my bet is you'll fall in love with it, as I did. Absolutely recommended!" Report Abuse
