Notes and Editorial Reviews

Julius Katchen took to the Romantic piano concerto repertoire as if all the war-horses...were written especially for him...The stereo Katchen/Boult Rachmaninov Paganini Rhapsody and Dohnanyi Variations generally improve upon the mono versions (reissued on Dutton), notwithstanding more incisive competition past and present. Katchen's awesome fingerwork cuts through the Rachmaninov Second Concerto's notey labyrinths like Drano tearing through a clogged sink. Solti's scorching, whiplash accompaniment has a galvanizing effect on the London Symphony musicians, who play their collective tuchus off.

Knowing the heaven of Rachmanianov May 5, 2014 By Dan Shanok (Somerset, NJ) See All My Reviews "I bought this solely for the "Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini" and I was truly rhapsodized. in those few minutes from about fifteen minutes into the rhapsody you can know all the ways of heaven. The second piano concerto is masterful as well and Julius flies through in a suitable fashion. You will not be disappointed." Report Abuse
