Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The Kleiber must-haves are two New Year's concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic (1989, from Deutsche Grammophon; 1992, from Philips). Here is the very essence of joyous music-making with the added visual value of the sumptuous large hall of the Musikverein in Vienna." - NEW YORK TIMES "The Kleiber must-haves are two New Year's concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic (1989, from Deutsche Grammophon; 1992, from Philips).  Masterful performances May 6, 2012 By K. BAKER (HEBER CITY, UT) See All My Reviews "In his first year as conductor of the NY Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein conducted more concerts than Karlos Kleiber preformed in his entire career. Kleiber cancelled more appearances than he appeared at. A few years ago the BBC polled 100 top conductors asking them who was the greatest conductor of all time. Bernstein was #2. Kleiber #1.

Karlos Kleiber's J Strauss Jr is so good that the magic fools you into thinking its nothing special until he lights into that old chestnut, the Thunder & lightening Polka, which is on the DGG recording of the 1992 New Year's concert. The 1989 concert is equally well done, just not as immediately obvious.

The two Kleiber performances go to the top of the heap."
