This reissue of two thirds of Messiaen’s published chamber music is pretty much self-recommending. The performances have the composer’s wife and muse Yvonne Loriod at the piano and were recorded in the composer’s presence (the latter, incidentally, is not necessarily a guarantee of anything—over the course of his long life Messiaen gave his blessing to several performances of the same work that vary wildly from both each other and the published scores). More important is Loriod’s unique understanding of her husband’s writing—all of his scores after 1948 that feature a piano were written specifically with her in mind—and the basic rightness of the sound. The Quatour is one of the most original chamber conceptions in the literature, and here its perpetual newness is constantly before the listener. The only other performance I know that captures this quality as well is the one by Tashi that is now 30 years old. I confess to slightly preferring the performance of the early Theme and Variations by Gidon Kremer and Martha Argerich on Deutsche Grammophon (1932) where it is coupled with Bartók and Janáček. Excellent sound, skimpy, inadequate notes, and a glorious hour of music—recommended. John Story, FANFARE |
