Notes and Editorial Reviews

Originally issued at full price in 1988, these well-recorded, more-than-competent performances may do as a convenient introduction to these scores, that of No. 40 being generally more compelling and stylish than that of No. 36, which suffers from a few untoward mannerisms. Anyone willing to sacrifice a few decibels of fidelity, however, would do well to investigate the magnificent “Linz” recorded in 1949 by Fritz Busch and currently available in an EMI set that is part of that company’s “Great Conductors” series. Although (unlike Marriner) Busch ignores all repeats, his reading has an apt thrust and vibrancy unmatched in any other performance of the work I have ever heard. Were it not for an uncomfortably jaunty third movement in No. 40, Read more Marriner’s approach to that score would rank with the commanding ones of Karajan and Colin Davis, its clarification of texture in the work’s finale being especially impressive. All in all, then, a reissue of some merit that may have appeal in terms of its pairing and price.
