"Of the two Op. 27 sonatas Beethoven subtitled “quasi una fantasia”, André Watts’ solid and poised rendition of the lesser-known E-flat work stands out for the way he nudges the first movement’s upward left-hand scales for dramatic effect, as well as for the beautifully sustained slow movement and clearly delineated lines in the finale.

[E]verything comes together for Watts in the “Appassionata”. The pianist doesn’t display inner tension and nervous energy in the fiery Serkin or Richter manner, yet his cogent musicianship and high craft consistently manifest themselves. Note, for example, Watts’ subtle shifts of color and voicing during the slow-movement variation repeats, and the blinding clarity of his left hand
