From the GRAMOPHONE review of the original release: "...the playing of the Philadelphia Orchestra is beyond praise, it has great flair and controlled virtuosity. The Concert Music, with its cleverly inventive interplay of texture, is even more neo-classical in inspiration with many of the elements of the concerto grosso, yet its slightly severe harmonic modernity gives it a distinct personal flavour. Again, the Philadelphia playing is committed and rich in timbre, while in both works the sound is full-bodied and brilliant, without glare; the Old Met where the 1979 recording was made offers more agreeable acoustics than some of the more recent EMI recordings made in Philadelphia." - GRAMOPHONE
