Notes and Editorial Reviews

For OMBRA MAI FU, countertenor Andreas Scholl and the Berlin Academy for Ancient Music have devised an aria recital with a twist: rather than an hour and a quarter of one da capo aria after another, they have included a selection of orchestral music from Handel's operas. Thus, the disc begins with the overture to 'Admeto' and ends with the "Alexander's Feast" concerto grosso and has a small suite from 'Radamisto' in the middle. The two 'Giulio Cesare' arias are separated by a brief gigue, as if to allow the ear to clear between them.
The orchestra shines throughout, both with and without Scholl, and the singer sounds completely at ease with the ensemble. 'Va tacito' is particularly notable, as it is practically a duet for voice and horn;

Scholl is in excellent voice here, bringing his sweet tone to some of Handel's loveliest music, including the title track, sometimes better known as Handel's "Largo." His countertenor sound may not quite be that of the castrati Handel wrote for, but it is worlds away from the modern contraltos who are more familiar in this repertoire. Read less
