Notes & Reviews Back to Top
If each of Gustav Mahler's symphonies dwells in a different world, then the Fourth is from a fairy tale, a magical adventure that romps through meadows in the first movement and passes through dark, enchanted forests in the scherzo. Finally ascending via a sublime adagio, it reaches the most glowing and contented of happy endings in the child's song of the finale.
Riccardo Chailly brings his gracious, easygoing manner gladly to this sunniest of works, allowing it to unfold naturally with relaxed tempos and little interference. Soprano Barbara Bonney makes a radiant contribution in the concluding heavenly song and as is so often the case in Amsterdam, the sheer beauty of the sound made by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in their great hall is one of the hallmarks of the spectacularly recorded performance. A most substantial addition is the 'Seven Early Songs' of Alban Berg, sumptuous late romantic works given juicy and seductive readings by Bonney, Chailly and the Concertgebouw.
REVIEWS:
International Record Review (3/00, pp.49-50) - "This is an extemely distinguished issue....All aspects of the work are both beautifully judged and performed....The playing of the Concertgebouw is beyond praise....[an] excellent coupling: a powerful reading of Alban Berg's 'Seven Early Songs'..."
