THE BIRTH OF THE VIOLIN Baptiste Romain, cond; Le Miroir de Musique RICERCAR 333 (65:19 Text and Translation)

Works by: OBRECHT, JOSQUIN, GHISELIN, REGIS, JUVENIS, TROMBONCINO, C. FESTA, BRUMEL, BENDUSI, S. FESTA, WILLAERT, BASSANO, LURANO

Most discs with a variant of this one’s name would feature music written by the composer-violinists from the court of Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua in the late 16th century—whose death Read more led to an exodus of Italian virtuosos that overran Europe. But that’s not what we get, here. Instead, we go back to the earlier part of the century, when the violin was still in development. Its active repertoire was largely arrangements of both secular and sacred pieces, and the direction of influence was reversed: while the Italians were composing their own works, much was imported along with well-paid Franco-Flemish musicians.

The program is sensibly chosen. From the older repertoire we have the likes of Obrecht’s La stangetta , and Josquin’s Missus est Gabriel angelus —the latter presented in a mixed version for instruments and voice. Some are rarities, such as the Salve Regina, Mater misericordie by Enguerandus Juvenis, who wrote a Requiem Mass that vies with Brumel’s for having the earliest known use of the popular Dies irae theme in its Sequentia. Another is a rarely heard lauda, O sacrum convivium , by Bartolomeo Tromboncino, a musician far better known for his light-hearted frottole . (Several were issued on an excellent recording by Retrover in 1999, Barzellette: North Italian Frottole of the Early 16th Century. On Opus 111 30–243, it’s currently out of print, but well worth searching for second hand.)

The compositions on this album by Adriaen Willaert, and Sebastiano and Costanzo Festa, inhabit a different musical world. They belong to the second (and far better known today) wave of madrigals that emerged in the Italian states in the 16th century. Here, the arch of theme and its harmony are triumphant over Franco-Flemish counterpoint, with Sebastiano Festa’s well-known Sel’ pensier che mi strugge sounding positively modern. It is also one of the very few pieces that doesn’t fit the program, with no violin and the lead given instead to soprano Sabine Lutzenberger.

Not that I have any objections to this. Lutzenberger’s pleasant, technically solid voice is a delight to hear, and also pairs off well with the violin and viola d’arco in Regis’s Ave Maria . Le Miroir du Musique consists of seven musicians, who among their numbers can supply a soprano, violin, three violas d’arco, harp, recorder, lute, and Renaissance guitar. Stylistic and textural differences in the music make for a constantly varied sound. A straight but attractive tone is used at all times, except by Lutzenberger who occasionally deploys a quick vibrato as a coloring device. Ornamentation is applied as discussed in Ganassi’s treatise Opera intitulata fontegara.

The engineering is laudably close if at times a bit over-reverberant. There’s a small amount of what sounds like instrumental noise from time to time (the most obvious is about three minutes into Lurano’s Salve, sacrata ), but nothing very distracting. With good performances in a diverse and interesting repertoire, this one’s definitely recommended.
