Notes and Editorial Reviews

The second Mahler CD release within the MDR Edition series contains the famous “Adagietto” used in 1971 in Luchino Visconti’s film Death in Venice. This is one of Mahler’s most emotionally extreme symphonies, containing his darkest funeral march (Movement 1).  A Much Better 5th Than Most June 13, 2013 By G. Baldwin (Canandaigua, NY) See All My Reviews "This is a Mahler 5th that I will return to often. I find it close to the James Levine Philadelphia recording of several years ago on RCA, and recently re-released in a box set. Although we have been seeing Fabio Luisi at the Metropolitan Opera a great deal during Levine's illness, we should remember that Maestro Luisi was one of conductors at the 2011 Gustav Mahler International Festival in Leipzig, as he is considered a Mahler interpreter of significant worth. I would recommend this recording for those who love the 5th, and among Mahlerites---who doesn't?" Report Abuse
