Notes and Editorial Reviews

A century on from its first night, The Rite of Spring retains its revolutionary cachet despite protestations by Richard Taruskin and others that “it was the now-forgotten Nijinsky choreography, far more than Stravinsky’s music, that fomented the famous ‘riot.’” Under Gatti, the Orchestre National de France gives a raw, primitive and darkly intoxicating account of The Rite, with every thudding polyrhythm and gut-grinding dissonance captured in clear, spacious sound. The Parisian woodwind players work miracles of suave, wistful melancholy in Petrouchka (1947), a notch less successful than The Rite but still plenty good.
