American soprano Anna Moffo acheived instant stardom with a performance of Puccini's Madama Butterfly for Italian television.
Her performance earned her phenomenal acclaim, and with good reason. It was not long before Miss Moffo established herself as a leading force in the operatic world. Miss Moffo’s spontaneous and deeply-felt dramatic instincts, supported by her striking physical beauty, brought a rare dimension of realism to her portrayals of the great operatic heroines.
On The Voice of Firestone program of January 13, 1963, Miss Moffo is joined by the great baritone Robert Merrill, with whom she appeared often on the operatic and concert stage.

Great singing from a glamorous starOctober 1, 2013By Jon B. (Boise, ID)See All My Reviews"These performances date back to the days when gentlemen and ladies attended functions in tuxes and formals. Anna Moffo, who sang Violetta in the Metropolitan Opera's 500th presentation of "La Traviata" this day (October 1) in 1966, was truly one of the most glamorous opera stars ever to sing on a stage. With a distinctive, lovely voice and innate acting ability (for years she had a her own television program in Italy), she was equally at home in lyric, coloratura, and dramatic roles. In the first performance, she is entertaining an audience at a charitable benefit at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan, singing "Quando m'en vo" and "Un bel di." Her performance of the "Jewel Song" from "Faust" is a real treat. Although Robert Merrill shows up for a couple of stolid performances, Ms. Moffo sings most of the songs on this video, and sings them well. For an opera star, she was remarkably good singing show tunes like "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing." She conveys such natural sweetness and emotional authenticity as one almost never encounters nowadays. Her rendition of the song and dance number, "Love is Where You Find It" is, frankly, very sexy. If you like soprano arias and some show tunes, you will enjoy this DVD."Report Abuse
