Notes and Editorial Reviews

Graupner rocks! Well, not really, and somehow that didn't come out sounding like I hoped it would; but if you've been following my reviews of this series and even actually listening to some of the music, then you know that as a composer for the harpsichord Christoph Graupner is right up there with good old J.S.B., Handel, Rameau, Couperin (any of them), or Scarlatti. His music is just very well written, tuneful, intelligently ordered, and a delight to listen to, and if you enjoy harpsichord works even minimally then you owe it to yourself to hear at least one disc in this ongoing series of the complete keyboard partitas (41 in all).

Of course, it helps to have an artist like
Read more Geneviève Soly on your side, for she has turned in uniformly outstanding performances of music that she clearly loves and feels very strongly about. Here she offers three partitas, two in juicy minor keys. The first, in D minor, is a simple work for beginners, save perhaps for the two "doubles" following the charming Sarabande. Partita V in E-flat major begins with a terrifically tuneful Allemande, and Soly quite ravishingly changes the registration here (as in all three works) when she comes to this piece's Sarabande, nicely avoiding ear fatigue. The highlight of this particular work, for me anyway, is the Menuet, a lusty, almost violently rhythmic piece that's unforgettably robust and earthy.

Partita VII, in E minor, closes with a particularly dazzling Gique (sic), and Soly positively tears up the keyboard playing it. The same work has an especially lovely Air, once again featuring the lute stop, and Soly borrows a haunting Sommeille from another partita (based on the fact that this one lent a movement to that work as well). It makes an excellent foil between the delicate Air and the wild conclusion, and it's entirely typical of Soly's intelligent and listener-friendly approach to the performance of all of this music. Typically, Analekta's sonics are top-notch, making this one of the outstanding harpsichord releases of this (or any) year. [2/1/2005]
