Notes and Editorial Reviews

Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor may perhaps be seen as the very embodiment of the Romantic concerto. It was, in fact, an attempt to break away from the virtuosic excesses Schumann found in many of his contemporary's works and achieve a special kind of symphonic-chamber music hybrid more attuned to quiet poetry than bombast.
Maria Joao Pires and Claudio Abbado bring the exquisite delicacies of the Concerto to the fore in this finely shaded performance, and, with the smaller forces of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe used, there is a sense of intimacy not found in other recordings. The E flat major Piano Quintet Op. 44, with its heroically striding opening and subsequent funeral march, is in many ways a more extroverted piece
Read more than the Concerto, but it displays the same mixture of concentrated motivic unity and sense of personal statement, all captured brilliantly here by Pires and company. Read less
