Notes and Editorial Reviews

Angela M. Brown caused a sensation at her recent Met debut, and I suppose it's only a matter of time until some major label signs her up, or so we can hope. Until then, we have this unexpected treat from Albany, one of the most inspiring, intense, heartfelt collections of Spirituals to come along in many a year. No less an expert on the art of melody than Dvorák called these "as good as Beethoven's tunes", and he should know. But Brown and her two equally involving accompanists (pianist Joseph Joubert and guitarist Tyron Cooper) don't just treat these pieces with museum-like reverence. They make each of them their own, and they signal their intent right from the beginning with a

Indeed, throughout this recital you can't help but be carried away by the personal identification of the artists with the repertoire, the arrangements going straight to the heart of the text, preserving the melodic essence of each while leaving plenty of room for the kind of spontaneous expression that makes the music live. Clearly Ms. Brown, whose career until recently focused on inspirational singing, projects every word with the kind of easy, idiomatic delivery that only comes from a deep-rooted faith that needs no outward display of spurious religiosity. She sings with simplicity and style, never permitting operatic mannerisms to taint her delivery. And her voice is gorgeous: pure, rich, and strong, with a ringing top that never turns shrill. Perhaps the highlight of the disc is her heartbreakingly moving interpretation of He Never Said a Mumblin' Word, strategically placed near the center of these 16 tracks. Deep River and Lord, I Just Can't Keep from Cryin' also make a strikingly powerful impression.

But the principal emotion here is joy. Brown and her colleagues give themselves up so completely to the music in He's Got the Whole World in His Hands and the concluding Ride Up in the Chariot that the result is as transcendental as anything in Bach's B minor Mass or Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. Dvorák was right. You don't have to be African-American, Christian, or even particularly religious to enjoy this music: you just have to be alive. The sonics provide excellent balances (no mean trick where a guitar is involved) and capture Brown so that every word sounds cleanly and clearly--and her diction is terrific. No doubt we will be hearing much more of Angela Brown in the future. Until then, we have this thrilling recital, one that deserves the widest possible audience. [1/5/2005]
