Notes and Editorial Reviews

Morten Lauridsen's Northwest Journey is a world premiere recording of art songs, choral works and chamber music. The collection features Ralph Grierson, Jane Thorngren, Donald Brinegar Singers, Anne Marie Ketchum, Viklarbo Chamber Ensemble, Sunny Wilkinson, Shelly Berg and James Drollinger. Northwest Journey includes new arrangements of Dirait-on, with a version for mixed duet and piano as well as a solo voice and piano arrangement of O magnum mysterium. With its Grammy nomination in 1998, Lux Aeterna (RCM 19705) thrust Morten Lauridsen firmly into the international limelight.

The collection of music presented on Northwest Journey shows many of the same as well as many different facets of this marvelously inventive and complex
Read more composer - from the jazz-inspired song that opens it to the powerful hymn that concludes it. Along the way, there are moments of profound introspection and unbridled joy, of repose and melancholy, of spiritual fulfillment and worldly bliss. Morten Lauridsen is not quite a household name, but this disc will certainly change that. Lauridsen is composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale and longtime Chair of the Composition Department at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music.

Lauridsen's music is richly eclectic and inspired by nature, particularly that of the Pacific Northwest where he makes his home. This disc provides a look at Lauridsen's kaleidoscope of musical styles. The jazz-inspired song "Where Have the Actors Gone" receives an excellent, bluesy performance by Sunny Wilkinson and pianist Shelly Berg. A great shift in style occurs with the next selection, "Dirait-On," a duet for soprano and baritone set to a text of a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke. Lauridsen's lovely tune receives a poignant performance by soprano Jane Thorngren and baritone James Drollinger. Lauridsen is best known as a gifted choral composer, and thankfully there's a magnificent choral work on the disc. "Ubi Caritas et Amor" is a sublime antiphon for Maundy Thursday that moves the heart with its unadorned beauty. Lauridsen is a wonderful composer whose modernism never sacrifices beauty, and listening to this disc is the perfect way to be seduced by his gifts.
