"Is the disc worth buying, then, in spite of the competition? Well, the answer is a definite yes, partly because the recital of 21 songs places Mahler above the competition. His melodic line had bypassed, and surpassed Romantic models by the late 1880s, mingling with nature and sentiment to make this the real heart of his achievement. Such is the consistency of Genz’s tone and patient approach that it all seems a great chronological song-cycle, from early life to too-early death. Vignoles finds a fresh and gentle slant on all the piano lines, as though the familiar music had just been found under a linden tree. Genz evokes nirvana or near enough through straight attention to the words, movingly natural diction, and careful tonal orchestration. When Friedrich Rückert says he is lost to the world, I finally know what he means. I don’t recall “Ich bin der Welt” seeming so obviously a love song before, and what a love song. Genz’s warm and tender reading lifts this great work out of the mists of spiritual suicide and makes it the more human, at the same time recalling the song’s model, Schubert’s own Rückert setting, “Du bist die Ruh.” “Um Mitternacht” offers Wolf-like rhetoric in the piano version, and real drama, undercut by the insecurity of the short lines and Genz’s careful shading. He conveys the uncertainty and panic behind this midnight rush for faith, in the dark, alone. The pairing strikes just the right note for each cycle, while the early narrative or character songs are not undersold. It is all top-notch vocal artistry, with Mahler rethought. The balance of adolescent self-consciousness, self-dramatization, and sheer wonder at the world, which Mahler composed into the Wayfarer songs is perfectly conveyed, while the quietism of the walk in the sun in “Ging heut’ Morgen” adds new layers of sensitivity to the familiar Fischer-Dieskau imprint. What surpassingly magnificent music this is, and what a superbly intelligent display of Western high-art at its most poignant from Genz and Vignoles. I just can’t stop playing the disc. Endless pleasure, endless sorrow, endless beauty." Paul Ingram, FANFARE |
