Notes and Editorial Reviews

Old-time record collectors can recall wonderful vinyl releases from such smaller labels as Nonesuch, Westminster, Vanguard, Bach Guild, CRI and on and on, wherein the proliferation of musical culture seemed to be at least as important as profit motive. All of those hardy enterprises of yore are eclipsed by the ever expanding, ever amazing output of Klaus Heymann’s Naxos empire. So now we have a “Spanish Classics” series, latest edition; the solo piano music of one Padre José Antonio Donostia.

At the risk of making an inaccurate generalization, it might be convenient to think of Donostia (1886–1956) as falling somewhere in between the lineage of the sexy
Read more flamboyance of Albeniz and Granados and the tender Iberian poetry of Mompou. As a young man, this Basque native lived in Paris, met Ravel, and drank up the cosmopolitan culture of the mid-world war milieu. The main work on this CD, however, the Basque Preludes, was completed before this exposure, but still conveys a confident imagination and eager expressivity. His later years were mainly devoted to works of a religious nature.

Barcelona native Jordi Masó is a familiar name in the Naxos/Marco Polo universe. He is a pianist of considerable charm and fire, and brings this tasty music to life with splendid panache. Bravo, Naxos, once again.

Peter Burwasser, FANFARE

The conservative idiom characterizing the piano music of Padre José Antonio Donostia (1886-1956) draws upon the more whimsical side of his contemporaries Debussy and Ravel, as well as Chabrier's effervescent keyboard writing, Grieg's rustic lyricism, and Fauré's linear refinement. Traditional Basque folk songs provide the basis for the 21 Basque Preludes plus the six shorter works that fill out this disc. While Donostia reproduces the songs in straightforward, unadulterated fashion, he decorates them with imaginative harmonic progressions and vibrant, resourceful pianism. I imagine that these works must be as grateful to perform as they are delightful to hear, if we go by Jordi Masó's masterful, fluid performances. His melodic shaping and rhythmic fluency over the course of the 21 Preludes, for example, easily surpasses Ricardo Requejo's slower and choppier readings on Claves. If you missed this attractive release on Marco Polo in 2000, grab it now on Naxos for half the price.
