Soprano Mona Julsrud and the Bergen Barokk return in the fifth volume of the complete Harmonischer Gottesdienst cantatas that Georg Philipp Telemann published in 1726. This consists of six works for high voice, violin, and continuo mainly for feast days and part of Telemann’s cycle of 72 works that he wrote for general use in the Lutheran Church. As with the bulk of the other works in this collection, they consist of a pair of da capo arias, between which can be found a short recitative. Telemann’s intent, as always, was to provide music that could be adaptable to a variety of situations, from small court chapels to provincial churches with limited resources, writing works that he thought would be within the capabilities of the normal musicians to be found in these venues. Given the complexity of the lines that weave in and around each other with considerable flexibility and skill, one wonders exactly what the composer was thinking when he defined these as standard Gebrauchsmusik . Surely, the ordinary Lutheran church musician was not at the level of artistry that these works require, and their virtuosity seems to demand someone on the level of expertise of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Leipzig ensemble. Pick any of the arias you want, the same level of skill is an absolute necessity.

With respect to the performance, I must resist the urge to say “They’re back!” But like the other discs I have reviewed previously (Volumes 2-4), this disc retains the excellent quality of performance that is both musical and filled with technical precision— Mona Julsrud’s clear and vibrant soprano handling both the sensitive, slower arias and virtuoso displays with taste and accuracy. She blends so well with Bjarte Eike’s dexterous violin that both sound as one, even in the often tortuous contrapuntal lines. The tempos are, like on that other disc, lively and sensitive to the Affekt of the text. The continuo likewise is an omnipresent partner, never overbearing but well integrated into the overall texture. Bergen Barokk has created another volume on a level with those recorded previously. Therefore, in the interests of not repeating the superlatives I gave those already reviewed, I shall be brief. This disc (and series) is the standard for Telemann’s chamber vocal sacred works. You need it in your collection. Buy it. Period.
