Notes and Editorial Reviews

Karel Ancerl's Alexander Nevsky, like his famous recording of the same composer's Romeo and Juliet ballet extracts, wrings every drop of emotion from a score that in most hands comes across as merely colorful. The Crusaders in Pskov has a positively expressionistic intensity, and Ancerl obtains some unbelievably lacerating sonorities from the orchestra in The Battle on the Ice. He also elicits from the Prague Philharmonic Choir the best singing of the piece on disc, period. If the performance of the Symphony-Concerto is a bit less fine, it's only because the work itself is almost impossible to bring off, not because either Ancerl or Navarra lack any specific qualities. The recent EMI recording (Chang) remains unsurpassed, but Ancerl or Read more Navarra fans won't be concerned. It's just not a very strong piece. Digital remastering, like many issues in this series, yields extra clarity and openness, but also a touch of fierceness. In the context of these interpretations, it works just fine, particularly with such rich bass and good balances. Terrific!
