Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The Bartók heard here possesses a transparency and elegance reminiscent of Haydn. Tempos are judiciously chosen, with the central Adagio religioso providing an eloquent repose between the two faster movements. Fischer is restrained yet graceful throughout, achieving a finely muted effect for the start of the second movement, though her tone becomes hard at times in the finale. Solti brings out the quiet amiability of the work, by turns witty, relaxed, and meditative. There are performances available that dig deeper, notably that of Argerich/Dutoit on EMI Classics CDC 56654, but few that equal the autumnal wisdom of this version."
