Notes and Editorial Reviews

This seems to me a good selection from the 297 pieces which make up the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book: Byrd, Bull and Farnaby, the three most voluminous con tributors to the collection, are well represented; and the range of choice covers from full-scale contrapuntal fantasias (one of Byrd's takes almost ten minutes, and so does one of the Bull In nomines), through sets of variations, song arrangements, dance movements (varying from 5-minute pavans to brief jigs), down to little moodpieces... [I]t does seem just a bit perverse to present what is certainly meant to be virginal music on the organ and the harpsichord—the latter proudly claimed on the sleeve as an "exceptionally large instrument" (a claim amply borne out by the actual Read more sound). It's possible to make out a good case for the use of the organ, in that the instruments were considered interchangeable up to a point; and in the more sustained contrapuntal items it has obvious advantages (and it is mostly in these that it is used here)... Mr Payne is a nicely crisp player and, without any special subtleties of rhythm or phrasing, gives a clear account of the 41 pieces...
