Notes and Editorial Reviews

Léopold Simoneau; New England Conservatory Chorus, Boston Symphony Orchestra/Charles Munch. RCA Red Seal 6210-2-RC [2 CDs; with Symphonie fantastique]. Reissued within RCA 60393.

Always inspired in the music of Berlioz, Munch uncorked a visionary account of the Requiem when he and the Bostonians went before the microphones in 1959. The interpretation is an impassioned one, and the playing has an edge-of-the-seat intensity that makes for sustained excitement throughout the piece. The recording, remarkably vivid for its vintage, comes with Munch’s feverish 1954 account of the Symphonie fantastique as filler. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.
