Notes and Editorial Reviews

Think Hovhaness without the fugues and freedom. The music on this disc, “Mandala,” is meditative, controlled, mostly very slow and quiet, and mainly monodic in effect. Occasionally, the textures connect with Ivesian models, like the opening of the Second Orchestral Set, but Roger Davidson’s smooth coat of instrumental colors is rarely ruffled. Mandala, the composition as opposed to the CD, is based on more angular fragments, with a slight whiff of Bartók, Stravinsky, Martin?, and Varèse, along with the joss sticks and Ives again. The vanishing end (or center) is transcendent, in a Holstian way.

Soloists are under the spell, and the recorded acoustics are realistically reproduced. Nice to hear some of John
Read more Boyden’s production work again, too, in the Rhapsody, which wakes up from the trance and heads straight for the Hollywood Bowl via Enescu, Morricone, Gershwin, and Gould in its middle parts. By the end though, 007 is once again hiding behind the velvet curtain, in the bass line. At 23 minutes, the Meditation and Dance feels too long, but otherwise this CD is recommended because Davidson’s achievement is individual, despite all those big names mentioned above. If you can stand music where not much happens on the beautiful (distinctly American) surface, then you should find this disc authentically meditative, and relaxing. Om . . .
