Notes and Editorial Reviews

Winner of the Best Documentary Award at the Hollywood Film Festival in Los Angeles this past October, Peter Rosen’s latest work is a grand tribute to the great Armenian composer in his centennial year and a daring, yet moving study of his complex life under Stalin’s tyranny. The film is constructed mostly from archival footage: the Soviet leaders on Kremlin’s podium, the marching Red Army militia, the 1948 Congress of the Soviet composers, musical recitals, award ceremonies, etc. Musical segments include excerpts from Spartacus and Gayne ballets and Mstislav Rostropovich in a complete performance of the Cello Rhapsody as a DVD bonus. 83 min. B&W and Color. Playable in all regions.
