Notes and Editorial Reviews

Aside from a couple of acoustic items, these recordings date from 1928-32 and must have sounded marvelous in their time. All of Ketèlby's special effects of scoring come through nicely in Peter Dempsey's fine restorations: the bird calls, prominent harp or celesta passages, and a surprising amount of percussion detail. The performances, primarily under the composer's direction with his own orchestra, carry the unmistakable stamp of authority, and even the sonic limitations of the day only seem to add to the charm of these delightful period pieces. More to the point, Naxos includes several works absent from recent stereo compilations (just about all of which seem to be out of print at present), including By the Blue Hawaiian Waters (complete Read more with Hawaiian guitar) and the substantial Three Fanciful Sketches. If you're into inspired kitsch, salon music, and/or nostalgia and want to have a great time, you'll find this cleverly planned and beautifully assembled collection essential.
