Not what I expectedJanuary 2, 2015By Morris Reagan (Madison, MS)See All My Reviews"I should have been more careful in selecting this Messiah. I didn't realize that I was buying Mozart's arrangement of Handel's oratorio. Even though English subtitles are provided I'd rather here the work performed with Jennen's original English text that van Sweiten's rendition in German. Moreover I prefer the type of instrumentation that Handel used. It's strange to hear clarinets in the orchestra and I wonder why Mozart chose to use the horn in "The trumpet shall sound" rather than the trumpet itself. A curious but not a rewarding experience. To my mind the finest recording of Messiah among the 20 or so reproductions in my collection is the CD recording by the King's College Choir (Cambridge) under Stephen Cleobury released about 1992. "I know that my Redeemer livith" has never been sung more beautifully. King's College Choir under Cleobury recorded another performance on DVD about two years ago, but I think Cleobury's first recording is to be preferred."Report Abuse
