Notes and Editorial Reviews

This box sells at budget price. Each disc comes with a booklet of Italian texts, but no notes: a collection by the Consort of Musicke from Musica Oscura 070995; a collection on texts of Tasso under Alessandrini; two discs of Book VII under Gini; a fifth disc under Francesco Cera (Tactus TC 561307); and the last disc, also under Gini, assembled from his first two Tactus discs, TC 56031101-02.

Rooley’s disc, made in 1992, paired some madrigals on erotic texts with the contrafacta that the composer made using sacred texts. This is not as bizarre as it may seem (unless perhaps the original words stick in the listener’s mind), for music of physical passion becomes music of spiritual passion rather easily, since only the words put
Read more meaning to the melodies. Some of the original settings had formed a Consort of Musicke program a decade earlier, and these re-makes sound like more mature interpretations. The label was Rooley’s own, a development that ran parallel to many other performing groups and probably reflected the inability of the major labels to find a market for all the recordings he was producing.

Alessandrini’s disc was an early example of his superb interpretations of Monteverdi. He moved to two other labels in succession as he began a traversal of the complete madrigals book by book (Book 6 on Arcana and Books 2, 4, 5, and 8 on Opus 111), but his singers defected and he has regrouped (evidenced by the latest Vespro della beata Vergine). The group of Tasso settings was really a fine idea, apart from the more obvious approach of complete books, and it was executed with aplomb.

Gini’s set of Book 7 was praised when new, but the announcement that it was the first issue in a complete set of Monteverdi’s madrigals was confused by the appearance of several single discs that included some of the same performances. A decade later, after Gini had faded from the scene without continuing the project to completion, La Venexiana offered an even finer execution of Book 7. Gini’s other contribution to this set collects Combattimento from his first single disc and Lamento della Ninfa and Il ballo delle Ingrate from his second single.

Finally, the new element in this set is Francesco Cera, a new name to me, in a 1999 recording. Seven Scherzi musicali of 1632 and four more published in the posthumous Book 9, all pieces that have been familiar on records for decades, are the central group, framed by the Lamento d’Arianna and Ottavia’s lament from L’Incoronazione di Poppea, one much more familiar than the other. (Emma Kirkby sings the contrafact Pianto della madonna on the first disc above but not this Arianna original.) The solo selections alternate between soprano Rosita Frisani and mezzo Manuela Custer (the latter has both laments). Two duets are placed exactly in the middle of the program. This is intelligent planning, but I find Custer’s voice less stylish than Frisani’s. All in all, you can pick and choose other discs, but you won’t get them for this price, the main reason for buying a package like this.
