Notes and Editorial Reviews

Although the sonics are understandably a bit dated, there is no finer coupling of these two favorite concertos. In the Grieg, Leon Fleisher plays the music with uncommon strength--and without any of that precious fussiness that can make the music sound inappropriately soft-edged. In the outer movements the rhythms have real bounce (particularly the finale), while the lyrical adagio's directness only adds to the music's innate poetry. The Schumann is similarly magnificent, with wonderful fluency in the opening movement and a surge of joy pulsing through the finale. Fleisher's tone, bright and clean, matches the interpretations, and it goes without saying that you won't find better accompaniments than what Szell and Cleveland offer here. His Read more way with the Schumann in particular reveals his well-known affinity for this music: just listen to his handling of transitions in the first movement. A true classic!

Great Performances February 3, 2017 By owen  ryan (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "It was a case of intuitive sympatico with Szell and Fleiser. Their performances together were fused with greatness. So it is with these two wonderful performances. It does not get any better than this! The 1960 recording is up close but clear and completely satisfactory. Strongly recommended." Report Abuse

Among the Best Ever August 22, 2012 By G. Dollinger (Bellflower, CA) See All My Reviews "There are many wonderful recordings of these familiar works available, but Leon Fleisher's legendary versions of the Grieg and Schumann piano concertos with Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra have never been bettered. Magnificent performances at a budget price." Report Abuse
