| This is a very good collection of Honegger goodies, well played and very well recorded. The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra tears into the Third Symphony with gusto, and only a basic lightness in the strings and a marginal lack of bite in the lower brass prevents this performance from achieving the violence that the music ideally demands. That said, the slow movement comes off beautifully, and the climax of the finale is really hair-raising. The shorter works also have an uncommon deftness and clarity, with Pacific 231 chugging along impressively, its multiple rhythms registering with unprecedented impact and accuracy. I've always enjoyed the untitled Mouvement symphonique No. 3 very much, and this performance puts it over as well as any, with plenty of energy and élan. The same holds true for Rugby, while the bittersweet Pastorale d'été has the necessary atmosphere and nostalgia, with fine contributions from the woodwind section.
