Notes & Reviews Back to Top
The 1950s witnessed a period of dramatic change in the record industry. As the decade dawned the 78 rpm disc was still the main provider of recorded music in the home. To improve the sound quality, 45 rpm discs, pressed on vinyl with its quieter surfaces, arrived to duplicate the 78 releases, until a complete change around occurred by the time the 1950s bowed out, and 78s were consigned to history. But of course, the most important development was the Long Playing record which made its tentative appearance as the 1940s were coming to a close. The fact that the world was still suffering from austerity following World War II, meant that it was some while before LPs really took off in the mid-1950s, with sales eventually getting another boost when stereo arrived in 1957. This collection concentrates on the early 1950s, which means that (with two exceptions – both US LPs) the music was first heard revolving at 78 rpm; now here it is on compact disc. (ADD MONO 77:52)
