Notes and Editorial Reviews

Very fine, indeed. [Yates]avoids the bane of modern harpsichord jockeys, for whom technical display is both a means and an end. Her measured pace in the allemande from the Suite in A allows the density and structure of the figurations to establish their own subjective impression of speed. Yates’s La tricotets has an insouciant calm that captivates, and the moderate tempo of her La triomphante admits interpretative space where others perceive the need to turn majesty into manic pursuit. Yet she resists providing too slow a tempo to the wistful, minor-key La livri, finding appropriate places to suspend momentum, and emphasize the piece’s delicate melancholy. Yates understands the musical rhetoric of each piece. Her Fanfarinette never loses Read more its relaxed, skipping rhythm, with notes inégales applied broadly but sparingly. On the other hand, the luxurious confidence of La triolets is conveyed by a wealth of delicate figurations and great rhythmic flexibility; between them, the line is elaborated gracefully, and never breaks beneath too ponderous a weight. Most of the works on this recording—that include the 1728 Suites in A and G, the five pieces transcribed from his 1741 Pièces de clavecin en concerts, and the 1747 La Dauphine—exemplify this combination of a finely analytical mind and a poet of the harpsichord...With fine sound, a generous CD length, a sweet but resonant copy of a 1749 Goujon harpsichord, and good notes by Yates herself, this album is definitely a winner. - Barry Brenesal, FANFARE Read less
