Notes and Editorial Reviews

After listening to nearly two thirds of "Nobody's Jig", I thought "Celtic Adagios" would be a more appropriate title. Up to that point the selections were predominantly on the quiet side, dynamics varied little, tempos ranged from slow to moderately slow, and these arrangements by Les Witches (after John Playford's tuneful English Dancing Master settings) remained instrumentally sparse. Then with the 13th track, "Drive the cold winter away/The Beggar Boy", things began to pick up. Here, after a pensive solo flute introduction, other instruments gradually enter (strings, then guitar, then percussion) and the tempo accelerates Bolero-like until everyone just peters out for a rather anticlimactic finale. With the Read more following "A Division on a Ground" and "Woodycock" we return safely to the quietude of the dewy English countryside until thunder rolls in again with "Wallom green". After an opening wave of solo percussion sets the beat, the work evolves into a fiercely charged march as violin, guitar, and flute gradually enter.

Alpha's sound is quite good, with appropriately resonant acoustics and clearly defined instruments. While more dynamic variety would be welcome, if only to balance our interest throughout the program's 70-plus minutes, if you're looking for an expertly performed program of mostly low-key Celtic fare, Nobody's Jig may be just perfect.

Magical adaptation and performance by Les Witches February 15, 2013 By Blanche Horst (Alexandria, VA) See All My Reviews "I imagine that the Puritan-dominated denizens of the mid-17th century relished a delicious distraction from pious hymns to a free-spirited gambol on the dance floor to gladden the heart and flush the cheek. Renaissance dances cheer and make me merry in 2013. The mind, then, delightfully reels to consider the likes of Samuel Pepys and Henry Purcell lending footwork to give a fine turn to these excellent medleys. The pieces are distinctly English country with clear Celtic origins. Les Witches deliver beguiling interpretations featuring violin, lute and flute, clavichord, and viola to good period effect. While some pieces are lugubrious and somber, they afford a balanced but full-bodied counterpart to the more robust reels. In his time, John Playford was London's premier music publisher, the high point being publication of The English Dancing Master in 1651 at the age of 28. The Les Witches ensemble brings inimitable integrity and justice to its performance of Mr. Playford's dance card. Nobody's Jig is a pleasant romp indeed." Report Abuse
