Notes and Editorial Reviews

New York Philharmonic/Leonard Bernstein. CBS MK 42263 [Overture to Candide; Symphonic Dances from West Side Story; Three Dance Episodes from On The Town; Symphonic Suite from On the Waterfront] (originally released 1960 and 1961). Reissued on Sony Classical Masterworks 92728.

Nothing can compare with Bernstein’s own accounts of his music. The best recordings are still the ones he made with the New York Philharmonic for Columbia, when scores such as Candide and West Side Story were still “new” music. Originally produced by John McClure, these recordings of the Candide Overture and the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story have never been bettered, not even by Bernstein himself. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to

A FINE SAMPLER April 13, 2015 By Zita Carno (Tampa, FL) See All My Reviews "There's nothing quite like hearing the composer conduct his own music---especially a conductor like Leonard Bernstein leading the New York Phil in works like the "On The Waterfront" suite (what a gripping masterpiece it is!), the Symphonic Dances from "West Side Story" (I keep yelling "Mambo" every time that bit comes up), and the other fine dance music featured on this CD. I remember performing these and other works of his---like the Prelude, Fugue and Riffs, which was an absolute kick for us in the Los Angeles Philharmonic (got to get that next). I wish he were still with us." Report Abuse
