Notes and Editorial Reviews

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE! • Antoine Guerber, dir; Diabolus in Musica • ALPHA 022 (59:40)

A Dufay Mass recorded by this group (28:4) was cited as the ninth recording of the work, overlooking still another one by Guy Janssens that is due to be reviewed shortly. [This disc is part of] three other recent issues from a French ensemble that focuses its efforts entirely on the earliest of early music. The versatility of the group may be judged by examining each disc in turn. . . .

[This] disc takes its title, as every schoolboy knows, from the motto of the Knights of the Garter (“Evil be to him who evil thinks”), which was founded in 1348 by Edward III, the monarch around whom this program of 14th-century polyphony
Read more revolves. He built the royal chapels of St. Stephen at Westminster and St. George at Windsor, and the motets and conductus performed at the chapels of Edward III and his successors, Richard II and Henry IV, make up this program, sung by the men of the ensemble without accompaniment. Christopher Page devoted a whole disc (11:2) to the Knights of the Garter, but only one piece is duplicated here, Pycard’s Gloria à 5 (also in Pro Cantione Antiqua’s “Ars Britannica,” 4:5). The rest of the selections are anonymous, and I missed seeing a list of sources of the 19 pieces, only Old Hall being identified for the last three. The detailed notes focus on Edward’s claim to the French throne, which he would have inherited through his mother but for the supposed prohibition on female succession in the Salic Law. The resulting conflict was the Hundred Years’ War. This is a superb collection of sacred music at the English court, not rivaled by many other discs. Each of [this group's] three discs gathers together a discrete portion of medieval music, and realizes it very effectively.

-- J. F. Weber, Fanfare
