R E V I E W S:

These are among the most famous recordings ever made and have been reissued many times, most recently when EMI decided to recreate the original issues of the Callas recordings...most of her Verdi recitals focused on roles she either never sang onstage or, with the exception of
Read more Aida, very infrequently. The London sessions in 1958, the last year she sang Verdi onstage (in La traviata), produced the arias from Ernani, Nabucco, Elizabeth in Don Carlo, and, above all, Macbeth. She only sang five performances of Lady Macbeth, but this is Verdi’s “Lady” to the life...No other singer has so completely embodied the character and these recordings are literally as incomparable as her famous Tosca with Victor de Sabata...“O don fatale,” and Desdemona’s scene from Otello are also unexpected treasures, again roles she never took in the theater.

The three arias on the DVD are perhaps less valuable, but have their own rewards. The slim line singing in Manon’s aria and the beautifully sung excerpt from La sonnambula, carefully avoiding subjecting the voice to pressure it will not bear, give a unique fragility to both characters...“O mio bambino caro” is charm itself...this is a vivid reminder of why she was so special and why her star, which blazed for such a short time so long ago, is just as brilliant today." - John Story, FANFARE
