| "The set devoted to Czech conductor Rafael Kubelík...strikes me as offering a thoroughly well considered representation of his work thanks to a particularly wide-ranging sampling of repertoire, and thanks to the presence of so many ensembles with which he was associated during his career. Not surprisingly, the Martinů Symphony No. 4 — a work, as the annotations tell us, very close to Kubelík’s heart — is a real highlight. Following the symphony’s 1945 world premiere under Ormandy in Philadelphia, Kubelík led the Czech Philharmonic in the Prague premiere in October 1946, and then in numerous tour performances before making the present recording in 1948. The conductor is thoroughly attuned to the work’s multifaceted character and kaleidoscopic sound world. This is a visceral, commanding performance whose impact is only somewhat limited by the monaural recorded sound." - Marc Mandel, FANFARE | |||||
