Notes and Editorial Reviews

The "For Relaxation" series from RCA Victor offers music that, as the title suggests, creates an atmosphere of calm and serenity. Each disc in the series is dedicated to a single composer or instrument and features well known music of a tranquil, gentle nature. However, in addition to the familiar works, there are many pleasant surprises and unexpected selections all brilliantly performed by masters such as James Galway, Julian Bream, Pinchas Zukerman, and Gerhard Oppitz. Each album in the series is expertly programmed to set the appropriate mood of quiet reflection and, with the combination of superb music and exceptional performances, offers a truly pleasurable listening experience.

Read more with its ability to express a wide variety of emotions and styles ranging from simple, lyrical melodies to unbridled, virtuosic declamations. VIOLIN FOR RELAXATION offers the tranquil, contemplative side of the instrument with romantic staples of the repertory such as Massenet's 'Meditation' and Rachmaninov's 'Vocalise.' Mozart, Bach, and Mendelssohn are well represented, but the highlights of the disc are sensitive, meditative readings by Anne Akiko Meyers of Vaughan Williams's 'The Lark Ascending' and a song by Kosaku Yamada, 'Aka-Tonbo.' The disc concludes with Maria Bachman's luminous performance of Messiaen's "Praise to the Immortality of Jesus." Read less
