Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet—John Dearman, Bill Kanengiser, Scott Tennant, and Andrew York—planned this fascinating disc to celebrate the musicians whose playing and compositions have especially influenced and inspired them. They know most of these guitar heroes only by their music, but they have known a few personally: the Romeros, the Assad Duo, and Duane York (Andrew’s father). Because each of the 13 tracks on this generous CD honors one or more of these heroes, it seems appropriate to depart from the usual Fanfare style of headnote in favor of a fuller disclosure. My concluding paragraph will list the guitar-heroes being honored, the selection’s title, and, in cases where they differ from the hero(es), composer and/or arranger.

In their notes, the members of the LAGQ state that their roots were in pop, folk, and jazz rather than in the classics in which they have specialized. But there are many elements of classical music in this collection: the arrangements are worked out with the care and precision of a Bach double fugue, and the program includes an extraordinary variety of melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic styles. Among the many styles represented or suggested, sometimes more than one in a particular number, are space-age meditation, flamenco, bluegrass, progressive jazz, rock, and especially “label-defying new music.” On grounds of musical interest, splendid performance, and brilliant recording, this is an outstanding recording.

As the headnote relates, Telarc has released this program in two formats, regular CD and hybrid multichannel SACD. In ordinary stereo, the members of the quartet are lined up from left to right. In SACD, the listener is drawn toward the center of the ensemble, where there is a finer definition of instrumental timbres and a greater sense of the musical threads that make up the tapestry of sound. Both stereo and surround modes are exemplary for their type.

And now, the contents; arrangers are indicated by our usual “arr.”; where there is none, the name following the title is the composer. Ralph Towner: Icarus, arr. Kanengiser. Norman Blake & David Bromberg; B&B, York. John McLaughlin: We Know that You Know; Reverie for Mahavishnu, Brian Head. Jimi Hendrix: Pluck, Strum, and Hammer, Bryan Johanson. Pat Metheny: Letter from Home, arr. Mark Small. Assad Duo: Uarekena, Sergio Assad. Steve Howe: Aire para un Dia (Mood for a Day), arr. Kanengiser. Django Reinhardt: Gypsy Flower, Matthew Dunne. Duane York: Pop, York. Los Romeros: El baile de Luis Alonso, Jerónimo Giménez, arr. Pepe Romero. Michael Hedges: Lament and Wake, Evan Hirschelman. Frank Zappa: Let’s Be Frank, B. Johanson. Chet Atkins: Blue Echo/Country Gentleman, Atkins/Boudleaux Bryant, arr. Kanengiser.
