Notes and Editorial Reviews

Coaches of winning teams talk about chemistry, and that is precisely what Solti and the Vienna Philharmonic achieved in this 1981 recording. Solti at times wants to make the symphony a bit too brilliant and brassy, but with an orchestra that can play the music in its sleep – and sometimes does – he provides just the edge and sense of impulse needed to make the performance come alive. Tempos are near-ideal, and the piece is given time to settle into those wonderful regions of tone color Schubert alone seemed to inhabit. Solti observes the repeats in the first and last movements, the latter particularly important if the finale is to have the weight it needs, and he calls for that extraordinary but far from unanimously agreed-upon decrescendo Read more on the last chord. The Viennese players contribute many fine touches along the way, and what could be more apt than the sound of the Viennese oboe to begin the second movement? London captures the performance in bright early digital sound. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection Read less

Good Wagner, but only fair Schubert... January 19, 2013 By Christopher M. (Los Angeles, CA) See All My Reviews "Frequently reading good reviews of this disc has caused me to acquire it more than once, thinking I must have been too harsh in dismissing it before, but no, it remains a fair reading, but nothing special. At least the Wagner work has an appropriate "gemutlichkeit," but the best that can be said about the Schubert is that it is not overly driven by Solti as many might have feared that he would do. Unfortunately, neither does he bring any great love or personality to this great symphony either, as Gunter Wand or even Charles Munch did for example in their wonderful recordings. Maybe Solti thought the VPO would supply these elements on their own. Sadly, in the Schubert, they didn't." Report Abuse
