Notes and Editorial Reviews

Frager's way of shaping individual phrases, his connecting of a series of phrases into a continuous section, his breathtaking technique, his superb tonal command, his overall handling of the instrument proclaim him a master artist. Listen to the measured pomp and swagger of the Polonaise, wondrously shaped without exaggeration; listen to the sweetly phrased, sensitive Andante spianato, notable for its feeling of spun-out continuity; listen to the unforced beauty of the Mazurkas; listen to the tumbling bustle and rush of the Tarentelle—what an artist. The disc concludes with a magnificent performance of the magnificent op. 58, with an irresistible combination of power, poetry, and elegance (a great example being the original way Frager Read more handles the middle section of the Scherzo). Here's a performance worthy of comparison with the great ones by Lipatti, Kapell, Pollini, Argerich, Gilels, Rubinstein, and Cliburn. When you add the beautiful sound of the Bosendorfer piano, you have a great release.
