Frager's way of shaping individual phrases, his connecting of a series of phrases into a continuous section, his breathtaking technique, his superb tonal command, his overall handling of the instrument proclaim him a master artist. Listen to the measured pomp and swagger of the Polonaise, wondrously shaped without exaggeration; listen to the sweetly phrased, sensitive Andante spianato, notable for its feeling of spun-out continuity; listen to the unforced beauty of the Mazurkas; listen to the tumbling bustle and rush of the Tarentelle—what an artist. The disc concludes with a magnificent performance of the magnificent op. 58, with an irresistible combination of power, poetry, and elegance (a great example being the original way FragerRead more handles the middle section of the Scherzo). Here's a performance worthy of comparison with the great ones by Lipatti, Kapell, Pollini, Argerich, Gilels, Rubinstein, and Cliburn. When you add the beautiful sound of the Bosendorfer piano, you have a great release.
Majestic ChopinJanuary 1, 2017By owen ryan (lakewood, CA)See All My Reviews"I have the original 1979 release of this '' album'' which did not include the Sonata no. 3. This disc provides an interesting selection of works. Frager may be a notable talent but the real star of this CD is the Bosendorfer Imperial Grand. It is the world's largest piano measuring 9.5 feet from keyboard to longest string. it has 8 full octaves; 97 keys compared to the standard 88 note keyboard. This early (1978) digital recording sounds pretty good--few of that vintage, including other Telarcs, have audio of this quality."Report Abuse
Superlative ChopinJuly 6, 2016By Reg Jones (Hamilton, VA)See All My Reviews"I gave my overall evaluation of this series of Malcolm Frager recordings in the one devoted to American composers. His Chopin, played on a beautiful Bosendorfer piano, avoids the limp-wristed school of piano playing. Instead, these performances encompass a wide ranger of dynamics and speeds, with each piece being fully characterized but not exaggerated. Superb sound."Report Abuse
