How is it possible that a concerto by Georg Matthias Monn can come off better than either of Haydn’s masterpieces? The name of this period-instrument ensemble is a first clue: its stylish playing is perfectly in tune with Monn’s late-Baroque work... The Monn, a substantial if lesser work, gets a charming, lively performance; attacks are more forceful and ensemble string tone sweeter. It has a beautiful Adagio, which soars in this performance as the two Haydn Adagios did not, and the genial finale skips gracefully along.

Harmonia Mundi’s recorded sound is rich and vibrant, if a bit over-reverberant. Monn’s being better than Haydn is not much of a recommendation for this disc. For the Haydn concertos, stick with past favorites,
