Notes and Editorial Reviews

"In 1915, just two years before the Russian Revolution, Sergei Rachmaninov wrote the breathtaking All-Night Vigil, a high-water mark for Russian Orthodox choral music. But the work had a short shelf life as the Bolsheviks cracked down on religion. These days, recordings of the work abound, but this new version by the Latvian Radio Choir and conductor Sigvards Klava is among the best. There's no orchestra, just voices, yet Rachmaninov applies terrific coloristic and orchestral effects. In one section, sopranos ring out like tolling church bells. And here, listen for the rich, symphonic layering he gets with groups of voices shining like rays of light through stained glass." – Tom Huizenga, NPR Music "In 1915, just two years before the Russian Revolution, Sergei Rachmaninov wrote the breathtaking All-Night Vigil, a high-water mark for Russian Orthodox choral music.  Russian Liturgical Charmer February 18, 2014 By T. Stearns (Nashua, NH) See All My Reviews "I am not a trained musicologist, I am simply a music lover. Russian liturgical music is a favorite of my and this disk is a very good example of the type. Excellent singing, nicely recorded in a large hall with just the right amount of reverb. Well engineered with a good stereo image and nicely captured voices." Report Abuse
A cappella at it's best. May 30, 2013 By Francis J Liegey (Oyster Bay, NY) See All My Reviews "This recording is the best example to date I have heard a cappella vespers. At times one can almost hear an orchestra in the background and the listener must remind himself no... this is the resonance of voices well-trained giving an extraordinary performance." Report Abuse
