This recording features Loren Maazel conducting one of the greatest Wagner orchestras, the Berlin Philharmonic, in a program of operatic excerpts and the lyrical 'Siegfried Idyll.'

Wagner composed the piece as a surprise birthday gift for his wife, Cosima. Maazel and the orchestra deliver a wonderfully lyrical performance, as each theme sings with gentle grace.
